ocean sustainability
CONSCIOUS CONSUMER
Consumers are urging governments and businesses to overhaul our unsustainable seafood system and our throw-away plastics culture.
In recent years, grassroots initiatives such as Skip the Straw or Zero Waste have grown into massive citizen movements with global momentum.
Nearly 80% of U.S. consumers agree that we need to protect fish for the future so our children and grandchildren can continue to enjoy seafood.
TRANSFORMING
VALUE CHAINS
Corporates are pledging to transition to sustainable seafood, packaging and retail.
Global consumer brands, including Coca Cola, Unilever and Nestle, have signed the UK Plastics Pact in 2018, committing to fully transition to reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025. Sainsbury aims to have 100% of its seafood independently certified as sustainable by 2020, and McDonald's already sources its fish in the USA from certified fisheries. These changes drive the profound transformation of entire value chains.
NEW REGULATIONS
Governments, responding to voter pressure, are passing sustainability laws and developing new waste management frameworks.
Governments across the globe are banning single use plastics, setting up deposit schemes and putting in place larger Marine Protected Areas than ever.
SUSTAINABILITY
JOURNEY
Our journey from a society of hunter-gatherers to farmers of fish is already well on its way. Aquaculture production overtook wild fish capture in 2014. But to succeed we need to solve the pollution from intensive aquaculture, develop new tools to manage Marine Protected Areas, and make the seafood value chain transparent.
Our transition from a throw-away to a circular plastics economy is barely starting. But we can accelerate it by scaling now innovations that enable to Reuse, Recycle or Replace single-use plastics.
A thriving ecosystem has created a healthy stream of innovators MEETING THE DEMAND FOR OCEAN SUSTAINABILITY. THEY LEVERAGE AI, ROBOTICS, BIOTECH, GREEN CHEMISTRY OR REINVENT BUSINESS MODELS TO TRANSFORM multi-billion euro markets.
Companies WE PARTNER WITH are ready to scale up NOW. SWEN BLUE OCEAN PROVIDES smart capital, NETWORKS and knowledge to HELP THEM achieve their FULL potential.
